On today’s podcast I chat with Natalie Hoffman, author, podcast host and IFS enthusiast about her new memoir.

One of the things I loved about this book is the IFS-y structure of it. In one section, she allows her younger parts to tell their story, their memories and she responds to each from Self. Another section is written like a play: Named parts responding and reacting to one another.

Natalie Hoffman is the author of “Is it Me? Making Sense of Your Confusing Marriage: A Christian Woman’s Guide to Hidden Emotional and Spiritual Abuse” and “All the Scary Little Gods: a Memoir” as well as the host of the Flying Free podcast. She is a mother, grandmother, educator, and passionate advocate for Christian women in abusive homes and churches. Through the Flying Free Sisterhood program, Natalie empowers Christian women to discover and use their God-given voices, gifts, and freedom to make their own adult choices for their spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being.

“Scary little gods in our lives try to control and steal our true Essence, making us feel safe but trapping us in fear.” These ‘scary little gods’ can be organizations, family culture, or our own inner parts.

Natalie reflects on her religious, traumatic childhood experiences and how they relate to her identity and connection to her True Self and to the Creator.

We talk about her passion for helping women of faith, particularly Christian women, who are struggling with disillusionment and a lack of self-worth.

She shares about leaving toxic environments and abusive relationships and the importance of listening to our inner parts.

We talk about others ‘bullying’ parts and how seeing hurtful behavior through this lens helps our own systems.

We talk about ways to connect to our younger parts and how we all can live in Freedom and Choice.

It is a beautiful, rich conversation.

I read her entire book on a plane- The story, the content, the TRAILHEADS- oh my.

One thing I LOVE about her book is the format- I can't express this enough. The first section is written by her parts who tell different aspects of her childhood. She responds from her Essence, her Love, her Self to each part who tells her story. It is incredible.

I’ve never done a ‘let me introduce myself’

I’ve never done a ‘let me introduce myself’ post, but it was suggested that I might do one. So… Hi! I’m Tammy! (A part says this is dumb … they already know everything about you 🙄.)

I have a podcast, called The One Inside where I talk to various members of the IFS community. IFS stands for internal family systems. IFS started as a therapy modality, an evidence based practice… think of cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR.. most people have heard of these. Lots of people still have not heard of IFS even though it’s been around for 40 years!
.
IFS is a way of seeing personality. We are multiple… We have parts that protect us and parts that need protecting. We also ARE what we call Authentic Self, True Self, or just Self. When we have more access to self, have more self energy, or are more self led, we have qualities such as calm, connected, creative, clear minded, curious, and compassion.
.
I wrote a book called “The One Inside- 30 days to your authentic self.” I have heard it referred to as an entry level path to IFS and IFS for dummies.
.
If you are IFS- curious, this is a great book for you. If you feel overwhelmed by complicated aspects of IFS, it is a great book for you. If you work with clients and encourage them to do work in between session, this is a great book.
.
I love the Enneagram. The Enneagram says we have nine ways (types) of seeing the world. The Enneagram is a shortcut to discover parts of ourselves. I have parts who think it’s just FUN.
.
I love a contemplative practice called Centering Prayer. In Centering Prayer we let go of our ego, our thoughts, our feelings, our beliefs even (all parts). It is a way for all of my parts to unblend so there’s more of Me available.
.
I have a 13-year-old son…. I’m obsessed with him. I was on an infertility journey for years, and I have yet to talk about that on a podcast, but I will someday when I’m ready.
.
Mostly I want you to know I’m really glad you’re here. I hope you find the podcast and book helpful. I hope you can live more Self led so you can have sweet relationships and your world feels safe and full of love from the inside out ☀️

It’s been a week, and my parts have been activat

It’s been a week, and my parts have been activated. My enneagram 3 parts are always ready to keep me Busy and Overwhelmed. Then my type 9 parts come in to make me SO very tired. They had a big job of protecting Me this week, and I’m grateful.
.
My Dad lives right on the other side of the Key bridge in Baltimore. As a little girl I would be so excited to ride over the bridge with him and give tickets or these gold coins at the toll booth. As an adult I loved seeing the bridge… it was like my younger parts would always feel giddy as we crossed. When I was really little I liked to go by the factory on the right side as you approach the bridge that ‘makes clouds.’
.
I had parts who only wanted to watch the news and talk about the bridge, who only wanted to watch it fall over and over and over again.
.
My sweet Busy parts gave Me some space to be with the young parts of me who have been grief stricken and wanting to be home with others who are feeling the same way.
.
I am here with them all - the busy distracter, the news watcher, the sad little girl, the One who says How will we see our Dad?!
.
I’ve been curious about what the bridge represents and letting whatever feelings arise, whatever my parts need to tell me just be here and be ok.
.
