IFS and Adoptees with Kathy Mackechney

Episode: 144

My book, The One Inside: 30 Days to Your Authentic Self, is available wherever you get books. Or on amazon here:

On today’s podcast I chat with Kathy Mackechney, who wrote a chapter in Altogether Us.

Kathy is a relinquishee-adoptee whose purpose is helping other adoptees heal the burdens of having been relinquished, or removed, and adopted. She is a Level-3 trained, IFS-certified therapist and consultant wtih a private practice in Denver.

We talk about:

  • Helping adoptees feel heard and understood
  • Shifting language from adoption-industry and adoptive-parent-centric perspective to language that centers the experience of the person who was relinquished, and therefore needed to be adopted- hence the term ‘relinquishee’ or ‘survivor of infant-mother separation’
  • Educating ‘biologicals’ about why adoptees should be recognized as a marginalized group
  • Why ‘Not all Parts Get Adopted”
  • How Self gets exiled
  • Importance of using Implicit Direct Access
  • Possible Parts who may be found (Not me, Dismissed, sense of being alone, Relationship stressors, Control, Self doubt, Second quessing).
